kids and costumes and candy

Oh the bounty, the cute little kids dressed as pickles and elephants, the teenagers dressed as serial killers or just themselves + bag for candy, but who can blame them? My favourite holiday-- and maybe Paul's new favourite too-- is definitely Halloween.

Our Smashus was a red dragon, with a face painted by Pauli that evoked the hip-hop clown.

He was joined by Eli (a robot) and phoebe (a crazy veterinarian) to trick-or-treat in our 'hood. Their bags were full within one block and by the end Sasha didn't even bother to say trick or treat or thank you to people anymore, just "my bag!"

The best part is "sorting" afterwards-- dumping your loot onto the kitchen table and savouring the vision before you; all that junk food that your hippy parents, for once, cannot keep from you. Phoebe likes to keep an inventory: she counts and categorizes the chocolate bars, the lollipops, the gum, the 'sourchews' and the sultanas (sultanas always get finished last).

It's all fun and games until the gut-rot and fatigue sets in...

Cold With New Friends

What winter landscape could this be? Canada in winter? Try Cathedral Ranges on October 28th. We went camping this weekend and woke up to a winter wonderland. We went with my new work friend, Dave, who not only knows the secrets places of a small national park, but used his bush skills to patch Tim up after he took a scary tumble down a very steep hill. We scurried up rock faces, squeezed down crevices, almost blew off mountaintops and were courted by lyre birds and bower birds. It was good.
